Dr Pieter van Rensburg is an AHPRA registered Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years of experience. Pieter has dedicated his career to helping people navigate life’s toughest challenges. He began his journey by supporting police personnel in high-stress situations, a profound experience that shaped his approach to care. Since then, Pieter has worked in various settings—military, healthcare, correctional facilities, and private practice—always aiming to provide compassionate and practical support.

Pieter’s expertise covers a range of issues, including trauma recovery, grief, stress, anxiety, and depression. His approach is grounded in understanding each individual’s unique story and helping them build the skills and resilience they need to move forward with confidence. Whether you’re dealing with loss, feeling overwhelmed, or seeking support in tough times, Pieter is here to help.

As a result, he is equipped to support patients facing a wide range of psychological issues, including the debriefing of traumatic incidents, coping with grief and loss, managing stress and anxiety, and overcoming depression.

Pieter has experience providing psychoeducation in both one-on-one and group settings, helping clients better understand themselves and their emotional landscapes. His research on child custody and access assessments during parental separation has contributed to his PhD, adding depth to his expertise. Pieter’s commitment is to empower clients to spark change from within, often using motivational interviewing and other techniques to guide them through the healing process. With specialised training in trauma response, personality disorders, and complex conditions like psychosis and schizophrenia, he’s equipped to support clients through a wide range of challenges. Pieter’s experience ranges from trauma-sensitive career groups to mental health hospitals to private practise.

Treatment Approaches

Pieter’s approach to therapy is both compassionate and adaptable, drawing from decades of experience and a blend of therapeutic techniques. Starting with foundations in Rogerian and Psychodynamic approaches, he has evolved his practice to include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and contemporary, CBT-based models like Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Schema Therapy (ST). He also incorporates insights from Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy, using a meaning-centered approach when it resonates with clients’ needs.
